about

This album was released on Salvage Music, Sandy Cenin's little label. Salvage Music used recycled 5 &1/4 inch floppy disc holders to package and promote its bands’ CD-Rs in original and distinctive packaging. Unfortunately Sandy's hard drive recently died so we have probably lost the original artwork by Karl Melvin, a thing of faded melancholy beauty.

This is how we presented ourselves in a press release from back in 2005:

The Weary Drivers

The term folk-rock was given a bad name in the 60’s and 70’s when adherents of the genre became more precise and anally retentive than the folk-purists they thought they were so shocking to.

So since no one else wants it, we’ll gladly claim the folk-rock banner. Feminists like to set themselves the task of reclaiming the cunt and The Weary Drivers think they’ve set themselves an equally noble challenge.

Rock’n’roll and folk music are the traditions we draw on – folk music because lyrics and melody are important to us and rock’n’roll because above all we are servants to the song not slaves to perfection.

Tom Smith, songwriter from Adelaide band The Moonies and Samantha Capon (Brisbane bands Ellipsis and Malekin) form the core of the band.

With guitar and piano as the main instruments, male and female vocals play off each other and are complemented by guest appearances on flute, banjo, fiddle, bass and drums.

“Great music exists outside of its time. With a wink to The Go-Betweens and an elbow in the ribs to The Church… a gorgeous, melody-heavy, piano and acoustica painted picture of a weight worth bearing…’A Matter of Life and Death’ is brilliantly weighted and exquisitely executed”.
Time Off Magazine, Sep. 2005.
